Feeling that he was readily welcomed by teammates and fans, Washington decided to return his focus to the game. In 1980 he was voted to the NBA All-Star Game. He was also voted to the first of two consecutive appearances on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. He retired in 1982, but returned for a brief comeback in 1987 with the Golden State Warriors. His post-NBA life since his retirement has been embattled by the negative attention stemming from the 1977 fight.
