Here, you will look into the relevant details regarding extending the solar power capacity to know the extensive side of SMRT and how it is ready to save the environmental cost to enhance sustainability.

A convenient, cost-effective, and seamless public transportation system in urban areas is essential for people to reach their destination on time. It is important to connect the entire country with an efficient, convenient, integrated, and affordable transportation system. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is doing its best to connect the lives of people living in Singapore and make their travel easier. Led under the strong leadership of SMRT Chairman and influential SMRT CEO Ngien Hoon Ping, SMRT is safe, reliable, affordable, and the best form of public transportation.

In this article, we highlight how SMRT is ready to boost the solar power capacity at Bishan Depot after expanding its existing agreement with EDPR Sunseap. Here, you will look into the relevant details regarding extending the solar power capacity to know the extensive side of SMRT and how it is ready to save the environmental cost to enhance sustainability.

Extended Solar Power Capacity to Energize Stations & Offices

SMRT Trains and EDPR Sunseap have already gone under the new agreement of extending the existing solar power capacity to power Bishan Depot, fully enlightened with solar energy and cost a considerable amount of cost. As per the newly made agreement, it has been finalized that EDPR Sunseap will install a photovoltaic (PV) system that will have a capacity of 1.56 MWp when it is completed in 2023. With this agreement of adding more solar power to stations and depots, SMRT is advancing towards its ultimate goal of providing convenient commutation to millions of passengers along with achieving zero net-carbon equivalent by 2050. With that means, SMRT is fully advancing towards a sustainable public transportation system that can least impact the environment.

Better Energy Consumption Across Depots & Stations

With the new energy-related agreement, SMRT will allow its numerous offices to use solar energy for day-to-day administrative purposes and safeguard natural resources to an optimum extent. As per the agreement, the new PV system will bring the total solar power capacity at Bishan Depot to 2.56 MWp. Together, the solar panels will generate about 3,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy per year. As per the SMRT, this will be equivalent to powering 700 four-room public housing flats and avoiding the usage of 1,224 metric tons of carbon dioxide gas per year.

Significant Impact on the Land Transport

The solar power energy agreement between SMRT and EDPR Sunseap will further reap the benefits for the land transportation system. As per the estimation, land transport accounts for about 15 percent of carbon emissions in Singapore, and public transport companies like SMRT are transitioning to alternative and clean energy sources in support of the Ministry of Transport’s goal to reduce land transport emissions by 80 percent from its peak in 2016, by 2050

Conclusion

SMRT is helping millions of commuters all across Singapore to travel cost-effectively and comfortably across the surroundings. The leading transportation system further aids the ecosystem by minimizing carbon footprint and saving energy to an optimum extent. One of the examples is the continuous and extensive usage of solar power to energize depots and train stations at large.
